This document is a technical report for an archaeological survey was conducted on Vandenberg Air Force Base in support of the Fence Improvement Project Near Highway 246 Project. The survey area runs along approximately 2.5 miles of existing barbed wire fence for a proposed fence replacement project. The purpose of the archaeological surface survey was to determine whether any archaeological/cultural resources were present on the parcel and if so, to map their extent based on surface examination and also, on a preliminary level to determine the nature and significance of any archaeological/cuItural resources discovered. Also, if necessary, recommendations will be made regarding the treatment of the cultural resources in the context of the proposed project which will consist of the installation of a new five-strand barbed wire fence along about 2 1/2 miles replacing an existing fence and the replacement of two existing gates and installation of one new gate along the fence. The report presents that based on archaeological surface survey and records review, three archaeological sites are located adjacent to the existing barbed wire fence. The report recommends that if metal posts are used for repair/replacement then no additional actions are needed.
