In the article the author conducts a study of criminal legal consciousness – a special form of perception and interpretation of law, in which, for a number of reasons, illegal behavior becomes acceptable for an individual. The analysis of criminal legal consciousness carried out in the course of this study indicates that the principles of the structure of the domestic penitentiary system, as well as the general level of socio-cultural development of society and the ability of the state to effectively overcome crisis phenomena have a significant impact on it. The author considers measures that will promote the development of legal consciousness among the population.
