Abstract Apparent epithelial oxygen uptake rates were measured in seven subjects before and after contact lens wear. A statistically significant pattern of raised respiration rates immediately following contact lens wear was observed in the contact lens‐wearing eye and in the contralateral, noncontact lens‐wearing eye, which acted as a control.
