1050-OR: Evaluating Feasibility of Type 1 Diabetes Education and Support (T1DES) Intervention to Improve Diabetes Distress among Black Young Adults

Introduction and Objective: Diabetes distress is associated with suboptimal diabetes outcomes and contributes to disparities. Black young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) may be particularly vulnerable to distress and benefit from representative interventions. The purpose of this study is to examine feasibility of the Type 1 Diabetes Education and Support (T1DES) program among adults aged 18-30 years. Methods: Inclusion criteria: Black, diagnosed T1D6 months, aged 18-30, HbA1c7.5 past 12 months. Participants were randomized into intervention (T1DES) or attention control (StreamLine) condition and completed 5 sessions over 12-weeks. Feasibility was measured throughout; diabetes outcomes were measures at baseline, 3-and 6-months post baseline. Between- and within-group changes in diabetes distress, diabetes management, HbA1c were assessed using mixed effect models adjusted for baseline and site to calculate LSM estimates and adjusted mean difference with 95% CI. Results: N=81 participants; age M=24.0 years(SD=3.1); n=51(63%) female. Feasibility outcomes: attendance rates were 86% for intervention sessions, 90.1% at 3-month assessment, 85.5% at 6-months (to-date). Satisfaction scores were high: 100% would recommend the program to peers; 100% reported sessions were very valuable (n=59,83.1%) or valuable (n=12,16.9%). From baseline to 3-months, T1DES and Streamline groups both had significant decreases in distress (95% CI’s: -0.59,-0.03 and -0.66,-0.07) and increases in management slightly outside significance threshold (95% CI: -0.01, 0.87 and -0.11, 0.83) respectively. Streamline had a significant decrease in A1c (95% CI: -0.82,-0.05). Next steps: examine changes from baseline to 6-months between groups. Conclusion: T1DES and StreamLine were well received by participants, high retention, and significant improvements in diabetes outcomes indicating both programs could be additive for emerging adults.
