This review highlights metamaterials' role in enhancing antenna performance and enabling 5G systems, suggesting future trends in wireless communication.
Metamaterials, with their engineered sub-wavelength structures and unconventional electromagnetic properties, have revolutionized the landscape of modern communication technologies. This chapter presents a comprehensive review of the advances and applications of metamaterials in the design and development of next-generation communication devices. Key areas explored include miniaturization of components, enhanced antenna performance, dynamic beamforming, and low-loss signal transmission across a wide frequency spectrum—from microwave to terahertz (THz) and optical regimes. The chapter also delves into specialized domains such as plasmonic metamaterials, which enables nanoscale control of light, and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which forms the foundation of intelligent wireless environments. Emerging applications in 5G and 6G systems, including holographic MIMO, visible light communication, and AI-integrated adaptive networks, are discussed in detail. By enabling precise control over electromagnetic wave propagation, metamaterials are not only enhancing existing systems but also unlocking new paradigms in compact, energy-efficient, and intelligent communication infrastructure. This review underscores the pivotal role metamaterials are poised to play in shaping the future of global connectivity.
