Single-step synthesis generates high-activity MoVBiOx catalysts for ethane oxidative dehydrogenation, suggesting new methods for creating complex metal oxides.
MoV-based oxides with the M1 phase are an important family of catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes. M1 materials are typically synthesized using multi-step protocol that require expen-sive precursors and high-temperature processing to induce crystallization. Here, we use a single-step hydro-thermal route to generate phase-pure MoV0.3Bi0.05Ox, a Bi-containing M1 analogue that is inaccessible using conventional methods. The approach employs simple oxide precursors, which are reacted in the presence of carboxylic acids and ethylene glycol to give M1 product in high yields. The MoVBiOx crystals have belt-like morphology and show high activity for ethane-ODH, while also maintaining ethylene selectivity greater than 75% at 80% ethane conversion. We anticipate this chemistry can be used to generate other synthetically chal-lenging mixed-metal oxides and readily scale to meet the needs of commercial applications.
