Analysis reveals using BEV traction batteries as BESS can support self-consumption in nZEB buildings, indicating economic viability.
The article analyses the possibility of using Li-Ion (LIB) set of batteries removed from a BEV car as short-term energy storage devices in a household in conjunction with a roof- top PV system. This solution was compared with standard commercial Li-Ion battery- based BESS both technically and economically. Two generations of the same BEV battery were tested to analyze its suitability for powering a building. The suitability and necessary changes in the design and installation of such a battery for building power supply pur- poses were analized. As a result, analyses of the profitability in predicted life span (NPV) of a second life of traction BEV batteries for building power supply were carried out. Pre- liminary calculations were also made to optimize the capacity of such a design. The author calculates the profitability of installing a BESS – both a ‘cheap’ one based on a set of bat- teries from a BEV (without a manufacturer's warranty) and a new ‘expensive’ one, calcu- lating the payback periods for such investments at current electricity prices for prosumers in Poland. The article draws conclusions on the possibility of using BEV batteries to sup- port self-consumption in nZEB buildings and the environmental base to perform it on the European market.
