Ellipsoids formed from a merocyanine-based amphiphile can be disassembled by irradiation with visible light. The thermal recovery of the self-assembly is significantly slower than the thermal isomerization of the dilute amphiphile. The delay between the switching and assembly processes can be tuned between minutes and hours by adding differently charged co-surfactants.
