Cross-sectional research finds sleep hygiene mediates the impact of adult attachment on sleep quality, highlighting intervention opportunities.
Insecure attachment dimensions have been associated with decreased sleep quality and reduced health behaviors. The current study aimed to expand the literature by testing whether sleep hygiene might mediate the relationship between adult attachment dimensions and sleep quality. Adult participants from an online sample were recruited through opportunity sampling. Multiple regressions were conducted to determine the associations between attachment dimensions (anxious and avoidant) and sleep hygiene, as well as to assess whether sleep hygiene mediated the relationship between attachment dimensions and sleep quality, while controlling for age, gender, mood, and fatigue. The mediation diagrams indicate a partial mediation effect of sleep hygiene; individuals scoring higher on both insecure attachment dimensions also reported lower sleep hygiene scores and poorer sleep quality. Future research should incorporate attachment-based strategies into existing sleep hygiene and sleep interventions.
