New species mniodes mandonii identified in Bolivia, suggesting unique distribution patterns in the Asteraceae family.
After reviewing herbarium material in conjunction with a monograph forMniodes (A.Gray) Benth., we have recognized a new species from Bolivia, M. mandoniiQuip. & M.O.Dillon, sp. nov. Our new species represents a collection originally citedas Lucilia facelioides Sch.Bip., a nomen nudum published in the enumeration of G.Mandon’s Bolivian collections. Since the name has no formal taxonomic standing, wehave based our new species on Mandon 178, with no fewer than seven duplicatesfound in herbaria. The distribution of this new species extends from northern Boliviainto extreme northwestern Argentina. Previously Bolivian and northern Argentinecollections have been identified as disjunct populations of Mniodes lopezmirandae(Cabrera) Freire, Chemisquy, Anderb. & Urtubey, a northern Peru endemic. Thedistribution of Mniodes mandonii interfaces with that of M. catamarcensis in southernBolivia and northern Argentina. The placement of Gnaphalium americanum Mill.var. discolor Griseb. as a synonym will require more detailed collecting in northernArgentina; however, preliminary data points to M. mandonii. The new species isdescribed, illustrated with photographs, and its relationships discussed.
