Ambient noise tomography estimates shear wave velocity in Mount Etna, indicating magma chamber presence.
Ambient noise tomography (ANT) utilizes natural seismic signals from surface waves generated by the interaction of ocean waves with the seafloor near coastlines. This method employs seismic interferometry principles to estimate the Green’s function between two receivers by cross-correlating ambient seismic wave paths. The empirical green function (EGF) extraction process is conducted to obtain Love or Rayleigh waves’ phase and group velocity results. This study used ANT data processing at the Mount Etna Volcanic Complex in Italy from May 1 to May 15, 2021, to obtain a phase velocity model. We received the Mount Etna region’s shear wave velocity structure model at depths of 500, 3000, 6000, and 9000 meters with a 1440 to 2540 meters/second velocity range. A low-velocity anomaly was observed extending towards the east and southeast at depths of 3000 and 6000 meters, interpreted as high-temperature material, representing a magma accumulation zone (magma chamber).
