This essay explores mobility in Victorian studies conferences, suggesting reforms to enhance accessibility and reduce environmental impact.
Victorian Studies’ conferencing culture is outdated in many ways, especially with regard to conferences’ accessibility and environmental impact. Reflecting on the EVENT 2024 hub in Frankfurt, Germany, which was dedicated to the topic ‘Mobility in the Victorian Age’, this essay asks how thinking about im/mobilities may inspire future experiments in better conferencing. In addition to considering immobilities – the factors that stop researchers from travelling to conferences – it suggests taking a closer look at ‘muddy mobilities’: the aspects that make attending conferences, both in-person and virtual, strenuous, and more so for certain people than for others.
