This essay reveals how historical and contemporary contexts shape Victorian studies scholarship in Ireland, linking it to broader global debates.
This essay offers a perspective on the forms that ‘Victorian’ studies scholarship takes on the island of Ireland, as reflected in the papers delivered, and the conversations that took place, at the Belfast Hub of EVENT 2024. It offers some account of how the historical and contemporary specificities of Ireland, and its relation to the United Kingdom and empire, might account for the distinctive tenor of twenty-first century scholarship on the Victorian period from Ireland, as well as indicating how that scholarship connects with broader, global debates.
