Analysis highlights cockroach diversity in India, revealing gaps in taxonomy and documentation efforts.
Globally, the cockroach diversity comprises approximately 4641 nominative species, 188 of which are reported in India classified under 73 genera. However, it remains a poorly studied and overlooked groups in terms of species documentation, taxonomy and systematics since the inception of cockroach taxonomy in India. This study synthesizes the research trends on Indian cockroaches over a span of two and half centuries (266 years), beginning with the first recorded species in India. A maiden attempt has made here to provide an additional ‘type locality’ data for Indian cockroaches, while also discussing historical taxonomic conflicts and exploring prospects of cockroach documentation and systematics in India.
