Overview highlights unique design considerations for UV-light cured and reinforced CIPP systems, indicating their application in gravity pipelines.
A practical and user-friendly overview of common Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) liner design considerations, with a specific focus on the distinctions and technical points that are unique to UV-light cured and reinforced CIPP lining systems, is presented for gravity pipeline applications. The emergence of UV-light cured and reinforced CIPP systems that provide for a stronger and thinner lining alternative has presented not only new capabilities and opportunities but also the realization that different design considerations are sometimes necessary to provide for the best possible installation. The key standards commonly specified for CIPP lining applications, including ASTM F1216, ASTM F1743, and ASTM F2019, are discussed, and an introduction to the ASCE MOP 145 design protocol is provided. A look into the CIPP liner design methodologies, specification considerations, and different design approaches that are most appropriate for UV-cured and reinforced liner systems is compared, from an in-the-field, project engineering and installation perspective. Discussion on non-circular pipeline rehabilitation design capabilities and factors is also covered. Differences between the designs and installation protocols that are typically recommended for traditional thermally cured unreinforced CIPP lining applications versus UV-light curing methods are highlighted.
