This investigation uncovers impacts of trenchless rehabilitation in sanitary trunk sewers, suggesting strategies to minimize disruption to infrastructure and communities.
Sanitary trunk sewer (STS) rehabilitation projects present unique challenges due to their large-scale nature and the complex ancillary works required to facilitate trenchless rehabilitation methods. While trenchless technologies are generally perceived as low-impact solutions, the reality is that STS rehabilitation often relies on not-so-trenchless supporting infrastructure such as bypass pumping systems, construction shafts, and access routes, which can result in considerable disruption to surrounding communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. This paper investigates the key impacts of STS rehabilitation, identifies common project constraints, and recommends mitigation strategies through real-world project examples from the City of Toronto's trunk sewer rehabilitation program.
