Report highlights challenges and solutions in ductile iron pipe installation via horizontal directional drilling, indicating efficiency and cost considerations.
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is one of the leading construction methods for various applications and pipe materials. Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) is also known to be one of the most reliable and durable pipeline materials in various industry applications. Combining the benefits of the DIP material and the trenchless installation by HDD is not typically the default selected method by engineers and owners. This paper will focus on various pre-design, design, and construction considerations that should be utilized for a successful project in terms of selection, applications, effectiveness, cost, and efficiency for DIP installation by HDD. This paper will also present a project application of approximately 1,100 LF of 36-in. DIP installed by HDD.
