The proposed atomic polarimeter achieves improved sensitivity and precision in optical rotation measurement using atomic sensing and optical vortex technology.
We propose an atomic polarimeter with optical vortex (OV) beam enhancement. Our scheme utilizes a single laser wavelength, which is locked in the desired hyperfine state of the rubidium-85 atoms. With the combination of optical vortex beam, possessing an orbital angular momentum (OAM) state, and the atomic sensing medium, the sensitivity of our polarimeter is increased more than twofold compared with non-atomic systems; and the precision can be enhanced to 0.001 degrees. The setup was calibrated using a commercial polarimeter. We also tested our polarimeter with a peppermint sample. The experimental result of our polarimeter (0.974 o ) is in good agreement with the reference (calibration) polarimeter (0.913 o ). Optical rotation sensors or polarimeters are widely used in medical applications and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
