This analysis reveals vertical and horizontal capacity of sheet piles in various soil types, suggesting new design approaches.
This study proposes a design method for estimating the vertical and horizontal capacity of steel sheet piles and sheet pile walls installed by the Press-in with Auger (PA) technique using Cone Penetration Test (CPT) results. The research builds upon the work of Ishihara et al. (2024) and investigates the effect of augering on the surrounding ground. Field tests were conducted in two soil types: soft cohesive soil and hard cohesionless soil. The results indicate that the vertical capacity of PA piles can be designed using modified versions of the LCPC method and Eurocode 7, with reduction factors applied to account for installation effects. Horizontal capacity can be estimated using Hetenyi's (1946) equations and Bouafia's (2014) subgrade reaction formulations, with appropriate reduction factors. The study also found that ground disturbance due to augering is limited to within 1m of the installation location. The proposed CPT-based design methods offer a practical approach for estimating PA pile and wall capacities using virgin ground CPT profiles.
