Quantitative-qualitative analysis reveals predominant genres in local media podcasts, suggesting thematic diversity.
The primary objective of this research is to ascertain the predominant journalistic genres in podcasts produced by the main Spanish media groups operating in the daily regional press segment. A quantitative-qualitative analysis file was used to examine the 16 corporations with more than one local headline. The file took into account seven aspects: name and URL of the podcast; name and URL of the cybermedia where it is published; journalistic group that owns the cybermedia; subject matter; predominant journalistic genre; language style; and narrative rhythm. A total of 83 podcasts were produced by 12 of the 16 journalistic corporations that were considered in the study. Ten journalistic genres were identified: column, commentary, criticism, chronicle, interview, news, story, report, in-depth report, and talk show. The results indicated that 59 of 83 podcast that were considered exhibited a single predominant journalistic genre. The remaining 24 podcasts demonstrated a combination of genres, with two, three, and even four different modalities present within the same podcast. In general terms, talk shows, reports, news, and chronicles are the predominant journalistic genres, with a preponderance of formal language style over colloquial, an almost absolute balance between informative and opinionated content, and a tendency to follow a medium narrative rhythm.
