Optimization model enhances strength performance and rotational speed in CFRMMC, suggesting new design methods for energy storage systems.
Traditional energy storage flywheels adopt the structure form of pure metal alloy or metal lining plus resin matrix composite reinforcement. To further increase the rotational speed and energy storage density, carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composite (CFRMMC) flywheel is a technical route with development potential, which also helps to expand the application scenarios under special working conditions such as corrosion and irradiation. By establishing a mechanical model and a strength performance optimization model of CFRMMC flywheel, the problem of stress solution in the case of arbitrary arrangement of fiber angles along the radial direction was solved, and the optimal fiber angle distribution was determined. The deviations of the analytical model and finite element simulation for the calculation of hoop and radial stresses were within 1% and 3%, respectively. The magnesium matrix composite flywheel with carbon fiber annular arrangement was test-fabricated, and the high-speed rotation experiment was completed. The deviation of the theoretical prediction of the maximum rotational speed based on the Tsai-Wu criterion from the experiment was within 5%, and the deviation of the prediction of the failure position was within 6%, which verified the validity of the theoretical model. The relevant results can provide a reference for the design and strength failure analysis of metal matrix composite flywheels.
