Case report highlights fatal cardiocerebral stroke due to hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state in a diabetic patient, indicating high risk during emergencies.
A BSTRACT Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) are frequently encountered medical emergencies and can be fatal if not treated promptly. HHS is considered to be a more serious condition than DKA and is usually seen in settings with poor drug compliance and several stressful events including infections, trauma, and stroke. HHS has also been implicated as a cause for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, concurrent occurrence of AMI and AIS, also termed as cardiocerebral stroke, is a very rare entity which has been reported with aortic dissection and marijuana use; and as a complication of myocardial infarction, we report here a fatal case of cardiocerebral stroke associated with HHS.
