Research demonstrates a portable muon detection system using sealed MRPC, improving gas efficiency in cosmic ray detection.
The Tsinghua University cosmic ray muon tomography (TUMUTY) facility, which is based on Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC), has been established in 2012. The facility has proved the feasibility of position resolution MRPC for Muography, but still shows obvious defects of high gas-consumption and bulky equipment composition. Sealed MRPCs (SMRPCs) are able to decrease the gas-consumption significantly by importing the seal bar. Profiting from the abandonment of the gas box, a single detector of that kind can be made portable. The research is focused on establishing a portable muon-track detection system based on SMRPCs. A single detector consists of 1 chamber with 5 gaps, each gap being 0.25 mm thick. The system consists of detectors with 450 mm × 450 mm sensitive area. The gases of SMRPC are C 2 F 4 H 2 , SF 6 and i-C 4 H 10 . Gas flow is at 5 sccm and electric field intensity is at 11.2 V/μm. Each detectors' readout strips were multiplexed to reduce the electronics. The system has been tested with cosmic rays. The efficiency of single SMRPC is 95%.
