Evaluation of nutrient quality in amaranthus genotypes shows significant genetic variation, indicating potential for cultivation.
AbstractEighteen genotypes of Amaranthus (Amaranthus hybridus) were evaluated for nutrient status during kharif, 2020-21. Range of major nutrients were reported in leaves and grains. The mean performance revealed that genotypes HUG GA 10, GA 3 and AG 303 had the best leaf quality, while AG 303, HUB GA 28 and SUVARNA were the top three performers in terms of grain quality. The phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation (PCV & GCV) were found maximum for leaf colour constituent b* (63.76 & 63.76) and minimum in leaf moisture (6.62 & 3.03), respectively. Maximum heritability was recorded for leaf colour constituent b* (100%) and minimum for leaf moisture (70.09%). High broad sense heritability of 99.19% with maximum genetic gain of 73.90% was recorded for leaf vitamin C, thereby proving the prominent additive gene action in the expression of the trait. Genetic gain was found maximum for leaf colour constituent b* (131.34) and least for leaf moisture (5.23) concluding efficiency of direct selection in improvement of such traits.
