The Positions of Russia and Neighboring Countries on the UN Reform

The article examines Russia’s position on the UN Security Council reform, taking into account its latest adjustments in the context of the changed international situation. Considerable attention is paid to the vision of the UN Security Council reform from the neighboring countries. It is concluded that the majority of neighboring countries support the expansion of the UN Security Council and a broader representation of developing countries in it. Russia’s position on the UN reform, its veto power, which it uses in the Security Council in connection with the acute situations in Syria and Ukraine, find both outspoken opponents and those who, in a more diplomatic form, do not share its position and support the limitation of the veto power. Initiatives to limit the veto power are dangerous and carry a veiled intention to silence alternative points of view to Western countries in the Security Council and to gain the opportunity for the unimpeded implementation of certain decisions.
