Investigation shows improved wear resistance in inlet and outlet valves, indicating plasma nitriding as a viable alternative to chrome plating.
As an additional alternative surface hardening technology after volumetric hardening, the inlet and outlet valve rods made of 40Cr9Si2 and 55Cr20Mn9NNi4 steels are proposed to expose to plasma nitriding instead of chrome plating. The wear resistance of materials of the valve and bronze bushings made of bronze AlFe9-4, working with them in a pair, was evaluated separately and jointly. Conclusions are drawn about the influence of the chemical composition of heat-resistant steel and the technology of its surface hardening on wear resistance.
