AI-guided system shows 99.6% accuracy in detecting lumpy skin disease in cattle, indicating a significant improvement over existing methods.
Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a viral disease affecting cattle, which poses a significant threat to cattle health, welfare and the livestock industry. This paper presents an AI-guided system that enables early LSD detection from smartphone-captured low-resolution images. This system utilized a vision transformer (ViT) model to detect LSD, which achieved 99% test accuracy and 97% 5-fold cross-validation accuracy when demonstrated on the heterogeneous dataset. The proposed method achieved a high accuracy of 99.6% with only 0.03 loss, outperforming the existing method in terms of test accuracy (99.1%). The accuracy of the proposed method was 99.1 % for heterogenous test sets. Inaddition, the proposed system will enable rapid and automated detection of LSD on cattle sites.
