This fiber optic sensor shows exceptional sensitivity for axial strain measurement, highlighting its engineering applications.
This manuscript presents the design and fabrication of a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) fiber optic sensor, specifically tailored for high-precision measurement of axial strain. The sensor integrates a single-mode fiber (SMF) and a thin-core fiber (TCF), precisely staggered and spliced to form an SMF-TCF-SMF configuration. Experimental results reveal an outstanding average sensitivity of -18.5 pm/με for axial strain, with a remarkable linearity of 0.9984 when the TCF length is set at 1 cm. Moreover, its elegantly simple structure enables easy fabrication while maintaining a compact size and low cost. This sensor holds great potential for a wide range of applications, including civil engineering, structural health monitoring, and aerospace.
