Descriptive analysis shows menstrual cycle changes in post-COVID women, suggesting impacts of infection and vaccination.
Background: Different types of menstrual abnormalities have been observed after COVID-19 infection in gynecology outpatient departments (OPD). Several factors are involved, such as stress, infection, and vaccination. However, there were not many publications on this issue. So, this study was conducted. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted for 2 years, from July 1, 2020, until June 30, 2022, in the Z. H Sikder Medical College and Hospital. 500 post-COVID patients were included from the COVID-19 unit of the gynae OPD by taking history randomly. Their ages ranged between 18 to 50 years. They were asked about their first three menstrual periods after infection. Result: In this study, 42.4% of women were in the age group of 31–40 years. Among the women, 43.8% were overweight. The menstrual cycle interval between two periods has changed in 56% of women, and the amount of blood loss has changed in 62.6% of women. Intermenstrual bleeding occurred in 35.8% of the women. 25.6% of the women suffered from missing or cessation of menstruation, and 41.8% complained of pain during menstruation. 91.2% women got a minimum of 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccination. Discussion: COVID-19 can affect the menstrual cycle. Therefore, care should be taken for women of reproductive age. Further studies are recommended to determine the duration of post-COVID-19 menstrual irregularities.
