CFD simulations reveal increased hinge moment coefficients with rising Mach number, crucial for grid fin testing.
To compute the approach conditions required for grid fin deployment test in available Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) ground test facility, CFD simulations were carried out for various Mach numbers ranging from 0.50 to 0.90, at an angle of attack 0o using PARAS-3D. The grid fin deflection angles are varied from 0o (folded condition) to 90o (fully deployed). This paper provides the details about estimation hinge moment coefficient at various grid fin deflection angles. From the estimated results, Mach number required for the test has been calculated. The results show that the hinge moment coefficient increases as Mach number increases.
