Program aimed to improve childbirth outcomes in Tanzania, highlighting interventions that may decrease mortality rates.
( N Engl J Med . 2025 Mar 13;392(11):1100-1110. doi: 10.1056/NEJMoa2406295) Global mortality related to childbirth is the eighth ranked cause of death, and this ranking increases to third in low-income countries. Many of these deaths are preventable with the correct access to care, particularly during delivery and in the first 24 hours postpartum. A sobering 60% of the burden of mortality related to childbirth is borne mostly by 10 countries, including Tanzania. This study was designed to test outcomes associated with interventions meant to reduce in-hospital childbirth-related mortality in Tanzania.
