Network analysis finds carbetocin may be superior in preventing postpartum hemorrhage, stressing dosing protocols for oxytocin in cesarean delivery.
( Can J Anesth . 2024;71:1344–1348. DOI: 10.1007/s12630-024-02829-8) Oxytocin and carbetocin are widely used medications in labor and delivery to induce or augment labor, prevent uterine atony, and reduce blood loss after cesarean delivery (CD). Carbetocin, a synthetic oxytocin analogue with a longer half-life, does not require an infusion after the initial bolus. A network meta-analysis by Jaffer and colleagues indicated that carbetocin might be superior to oxytocin in preventing postpartum hemorrhage, however, carbetocin is unavailable in Japan and the United States, highlighting the need for optimal oxytocin dosing protocols for CD.
