Assessment demonstrates yield variability and resistance levels across watermelon cultivars under nematode pressure.
This study evaluated the yield potential of 10 watermelon cultivars under Meloidogyne incognita nematode pressure at Auburn University's Brewton Agricultural Research Unit. Cultivars were grown in M. incognita-infested soil, and nematode populations and watermelon yields were assessed throughout the growing season. Results indicated significant variability in cultivar responses to M. incognita. The Crimson Sweet variety showed the highest resistance, exhibiting lower gall ratings and nematode egg counts, and produced high yields. Conversely, the Century Star variety had the highest gall ratings and lowest yields. A negative correlation ( R 2 = −0.3575; P < 0.0348) was observed between gall ratings and yield, highlighting the impact of nematode damage on watermelon productivity.
