Survey reveals limited integration of UN SDGs and underrepresentation of sustainability roles in Romanian construction companies, indicating a need for strategic planning.
The article presents a study that investigates, through a comprehensive survey, the practical implementation of Sustainable Development (SD) in the Romanian construction sector. The objectives of the study are to investigate the concept of sustainability and the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Europe; to analyse the main Romanian directions and initiatives regarding sustainability and to assess the industrial needs of the Romanian construction companies, based on a survey. The research goes beyond mere awareness and assesses the companies’ knowledge, interest, and commitment in adapting to the current sustainability trends and regulations. Through a questionnaire survey with 46 respondents working in companies from the Romanian construction sector, the results highlight that appropriate positions related to sustainability are not yet available or required within the companies. The role of a dedicated sustainability manager is underrepresented, and the integration of the UN SDGs is limited. The study also identifies “employee well-being” as a leading sustainable practice, while highlighting the importance of specific SDGs such as “good health & well-being”, “responsible consumption and production”, “quality education and industry” for the construction sector. The study reveals that the success of sustainable development practices in the construction industry depends on enhanced education and strategic planning.
