This analysis demonstrates how width-depth ratio affects shear stress distribution and mechanical energy loss in open channels, implying engineering implications.
Mechanical energy loss is a fundamental problem and also a problem of great concern in engineering practice in open channels. This paper studies the constitution of mechanical loss in channels and further studies the influence of shape coefficient on the mechanical energy loss and shear distribution in channels by calculating several channels with different ratios. The results show that the constitution of mechanical loss caused by B/H. With the increase of the width-depth ratio, the contribution of the time-averaged gradient to the mechanical loss coefficient becomes smaller, and the loss to turbulent kinetic energy dissipation becomes greater.
