Cross-sectional survey reveals school challenges and mental health symptoms in youth caregivers, indicating need for supportive strategies.
This article examines the caregiving tasks performed by children who live in military caregiving families and how these may impact their well-being. A cross-sectional survey of youth (aged nine to 17 years) and their parents (N = 202) was conducted to assess caregiving tasks and symptoms of anxiety/depression, antisocial behaviors, school outcomes, and perceived support. Children demonstrated some resiliency in their psychological and behavioral health; however, over half struggled with school problems. Effective strategies to support the academic success of children in military caregiving families are needed.
