Taxonomic revision identifies five new species of Tovomita in Neotropical forests, suggesting greater biodiversity.
Tovomita Aubl., the third largest genus of Clusiaceae, is distributed in the Neotropical moist forests from Costa Rica to Bolivia and eastern Brazil. In the last three decades, the genus was studied by researchers from several countries. Now, as result of more ten years of intense research, we present a taxonomic review for Tovomita. This paper presents the taxonomic treatment for 62 species, five of which are new to science: T. crassidactyla L. Marinho, T. iuruensis L. Marinho, T. leptostemon L. Marinho & Demarchi, T. stellaris L. Marinho & Amorim, and T. xanthochlora L. Marinho. We also designate 29 lectotypes, ten new synonyms, two new names and a new combination. Furthermore, we present geographic distribution maps for each species, as well as field photographs and illustrations, when available. An identification key to species plus two additional keys for Tovomita species from the Chocoan/southern Mesoamerican region and the Atlantic forest are provided. Citation: Marinho L.
