Observational study analyzes how speed bumps affect road sustainability, implying increased maintenance costs and emissions.
Speed bumps are widely implemented in urban areas as traffic calming measures aimed at enhancing road safety. However, their impacts on the long-term sustainability of road infrastructure have received limited scholarly attention. This study investigates the physical, economic, and environmental effects of speed bumps on road sustainability in Nsukka Town, Enugu State, Nigeria. Through field observations, stakeholder interviews, and pavement condition assessments of selected road sections, the study reveals that while speed bumps improve traffic safety, they also contribute to pavement deterioration, increased maintenance costs, and elevated vehicle emissions. The findings underscore the need for sustainable road design alternatives and consistent maintenance strategies to mitigate these adverse effects.
