This analysis compares mode dispersion parameters in microstructured optical fibers, highlighting differences in dispersion characteristics.
This work presents compared results of mode analysis, performed for two recently designed and successfully fabricated silica microstructured optical fibers (MOF). The first one has a typical hexagonal configuration differing by asymmetric due to offset core, displaced in relation to the MOF geometrical center. Configuration of the second MOF provides quasi-ring radial mode field distribution. It imitates ring-core optical fiber properties by special formation of designed 2D-periodic structure. We applied commercially available software COMSOL Multiphysics® 6.1 with rigorous full vectorial finite element method, while earlier on fabricated and presented MOF end-face photo images were applied to get averaged parameters for input data. This work presents comparison results of the mode 1st and 2nd order dispersion parameters (mode delay and chromatic dispersion), computed over almost all over ratified "telecommunication" wavelength bands for both two described above MOFs.
