Advanced approach improves operational efficiency by integrating drillstring vibration monitoring and ROP control.
Rate of Penetration (ROP) is a critical parameter in drilling, directly influencing both operational efficiency and costs. However, maintaining an optimal ROP is often hindered by drillstring vibrations, which increase the risk of equipment failure, nonproductive time, and operational hazards. This paper presents an advanced approach to ROP management that integrates drill-string vibration monitoring with ROP control using data analytics. A founder point detection mechanism is introduced, depending on key vibration metrics such as oscillation index, frequency, and change rate to enable early identification of critical transitions in drilling conditions. This allows for proactive parameter adjustments, reducing the negative effects of drillstring vibrations before they escalate. Additionally, a rule-based control framework is implemented, dynamically adjusting ROP in real time based on vibration levels, thereby improving operational efficiency and minimizing equipment wear. The methodology is tested through simulations using the OpenLab Drilling Simulator, demonstrating enhanced ROP control via data analytics. The integration of founder point detection and rule-based control enhances the adaptability of the system, making it a promising solution for real-world drilling applications.
