Analysis reveals Pogodin's utilitarian views on education and criticism of classicism in secondary education policy.
In the article the author examines the pedagogical views of one of the conspicuous representatives of Slavophil direction and an outstanding historian M.P. Pogodin. Unlike his contemporaries T.N. Granovsky and S.P. Shevyrev, Pogodin didn’t leave any conceptual texts on the issue. The analysis of his separate statements, memoir fragments and etc allows one to conclude that he upheld utilitarian pedagogical concept (though rather originally formulated) and was hostile towards official classicism, criticizing the police of the Minister of Public Education S.S. Uvarov. As to home-schooling, he supported the official line that demonstrated animosity to tutors-foreigners.
