Comprehensive review of sensors like LiDAR and multispectral imaging on drones, suggesting advancements in data collection.
This article summarizes the latest findings of aerial sensing solutions mounted on drones. It covers an extensive range of sensors that can be used during the flight. Most of these sensors are installed for data collection for later evaluation. The mission for these drone flights is data collection by the use of these sensors. These are the known optical technologies. However, there are novelties such as multispectral and hyperspectral imaging for precise material identification, thermal imaging for temperature measurements, laser ranging for distance measurements, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) for three‐dimensional (3D) surface generation, radio detection and ranging (radar) for object discovery, ground penetration radar, and synthetic‐aperture radar for underground structure mapping and acoustic sensors for audio processing. Other measurements also require contact with the measured object. These are the ultrasonic measurements for interior structure observation, hardness measurements of metal and other materials, and layer thickness measurements. The above‐mentioned sensors can be used in precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, archeology, infrastructure inspection and protection, disaster response, and so much more.
