Simulation analysis demonstrates improved power quality in distribution systems with hybrid energy storage systems and D-STATCOM.
Integrating Renewable Energy Resources (RER) into conventional power networks is gaining attention globally due to the growth of environmental rules, increased demand for electricity, and the regionalisation of electricity generation. However, the interconnection of renewable energy resources (RER) with the power system is a difficult task because of the unpredictable and intermittent nature of the RER. This interconnection presents several obstacles, including power quality, active and reactive power management, low-voltage ride-through capability, and protection issues. This paper presents the impacts of large-scale wind energy systems on power quality parameters considering voltage profile, voltage and power fluctuations, and harmonics of traditional distribution systems considering a modified IEEE 33-node radial distribution test system. The battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is employed to improve power quality parameters. The power management algorithm introduced in this research for improved system performance. Further, the performance of HESS is compared with the D-STATCOM (distributed static synchronous compensator). The MATLAB/Simulink software is used to carry out simulation analysis.
