Mixed-method research evaluates corporate compliance with ILO principles in India, indicating significant policy gaps.
Background: Goal 8 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals advocates for decent work and economic growth for all, including people with disabilities. However, corporate compliance with relevant international guidelines remains questionable. This study aims to evaluate the extent to which Indian corporates implement ILO principles for inclusive employment of people with disabilities, identifying policy gaps and barriers. Materials and Methods: A mixed-method study involving surveys and interviews with 40 Mumbai-based companies, supported by document analysis and secondary data. Results: Only 48% of surveyed companies employed persons with disabilities. Most lacked awareness of ILO guidelines or SDG 8. Key challenges cited included inadequate infrastructure, lack of training, and absence of policy awareness. Conclusion: There is a critical disconnect between stated policies and ground-level corporate practices. Targeted training, government incentives, and policy enforcement are essential to meet SDG 8 goals.
