Community service program educates students on iron deficiency anemia, improving knowledge on detection and prevention strategies.
Based on data from the 2023 Basic Health Research, 32% of adolescents aged 15-24 years suffer from anemia. If left untreated, this condition will lead to decreased productivity because anemia, especially iron deficiency anemia, can lead to several serious complications. The purpose of this community service is to provide education on the detection and prevention of iron deficiency anemia to students at the Tunas Medika Health Analyst Vocational School in East Jakarta. It is hoped that this activity will increase students' knowledge about iron deficiency anemia, its causes, detection, and prevention. The results of the analysis of the participants' questionnaire answers before and after the counseling were an increase in knowledge for the definition of anemia by 40%, the causes of anemia by 60%, who is most at risk of experiencing anemia by 50%, common symptoms of anemia by 30%, the most effective way to prevent anemia by 50%, foods that can help prevent anemia by 50%, drinks that should be reduced when eating so that iron absorption is not disturbed by 60%, knowledge that vitamin C is important in preventing anemia by 60%, knowledge about iron supplements (TTD) by 32% and knowledge that young women are advised to consume TTD regularly by 41%. An increase in knowledge of 47% was obtained. The results obtained regarding the desire of participants to implement a healthy lifestyle after counseling were 100%.
