Chinese science fiction films have rapidly risen as a significant branch of the Chinese film industry in recent years, though it emerged relatively late compared to their Western counterparts. Notably, the success of The Wandering Earth series is a milestone in Chinese sci-fi film, and it demonstrated the potential for high-quality productions with global appeal. Therefore, this study examines the current state of Chinese sci-fi films, taking the Wandering Earth series as a representative case, to explore the opportunities and challenges brought by AI-driven technological advancements. AI technology in filmmaking has revolutionized the global film industry from Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) enhancement to scriptwriting and virtual production. For Chinese sci-fi films, AI offers tools to overcome technical limitations, improve visual effects, and streamline production processes. This study adopts the methodology of “mixed case study and semiotic analysis and data sources” to propose the future development path of Chinese sci-fi films. It includes fostering AI-driven innovation, enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultivating a robust sci-fi creative ecosystem. Ultimately, this research aims to provide insights into how Chinese sci-fi films can leverage AI advancements to achieve sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
