This analysis evaluates how acid and bleach washing parameters affect fit and fabric properties in stretch denim, suggesting improved quality control.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to offer a strategic framework for the optimization of acid and bleach washing process to reduce the deviations in fit and dimensional change of stretch denim garments. Fit and dimensional change are the common issues in the denim-clothing sector, resulting in unhappy customers and cause significant financial losses. Design/methodology/approach A basic five-pocket jeans was put through regulated bleach and acid washing procedures with changes in temperature, time and chemical concentrations. Fabric dimensional change, grams per square meter (GSM), tensile strength, tear strength, color strength (K/S value) and fit measurement were analyzed as part of the study design. The treated and untreated clothing were compared to evaluate the impact of these factors on the overall stability and quality of the denim. Findings The modifications in washing process parameters, such as increasing concentration or adjusting time and temperature, significantly impact fabric properties, with notable differences in strength and visual appearance observed between acid and bleach treatments. The bleach washing showed perceptible improvements in dimensional change and color consistency, and acid washing was found to have a greater impact on tensile and tear strength than bleach washing. Originality/value This study is unique because it creates a balance between the quality and esthetic of the denim garment through chemical washing. This research provides an improved washing recipe that can lessen fit and dimensional change in stretch denim by maintaining its physical outlook.
