Rare Bird Species of the Non-Chernozem Center of Russia: Status as of 2024

The main result of the 7th conference «Distribution and ecology of rare bird species of the Non-Сhernozem Center of Russia» dedicated to the memory of Vladimir T. Butyev (November 30 2024, Moscow) was the updated List of rare breeding bird species of this region. 110 species are subdivided into 8 categories of rarity. In comparison with the previous versions of the List no new categories were added, but definitions of some categories have been clarified. Five species have been considered as non-breeding in the region during last 5+ years (the zero category, ceased to breed in the region), the other 105 species are distributed among the categories as follows: I - critically endangered (18); II - declining numbers (15); III - stable low numbers causing concern (23); IV - data deficient (2); V - species on the border of their distribution range (22); VI - expanding the range (12); VII - vulnerable species requiring conservation intervention (13 species). During the conference and after its end the group of regional ornithologists prepared the updated summary table of the statuses of rare bird species in each of the 12 regions, included in the considered Non-Сhemozem Area (Table).
