Assessment reveals rarity status of breeding bird species in the Moscow Region, suggesting implications for conservation efforts.
The paper is devoted to the assessment of the rarity level of nesting bird species of the Moscow Region included in the list of rare species of the Non-Chernozem Center following the VII Meeting on this topic (Moscow, November 30, 2025). Based on available publications, own materials of experts studying various aspects of biology, abundance and state of populations of nesting birds of the Moscow Region, as well as information on the occurrence of species obtained during the preparation of the Atlas of Birds of the Moscow Region, an assessment of the rarity level of 111 bird species was given according to three categories: very rare, rare and relatively common rare species. Occurrence was assessed by the number of plots in which reproduction of rare species of the Non-Chernozem Center was proven or probable during a survey of all 510 plots measuring 10 by 10 km, into which the area of the Moscow Region is divided. This parameter generally corresponds well to experts’ ideas about the degree of rarity of specific species, but for some of them its assessment was overestimated or underestimated, taking into account information about the characteristics of their biology or the results of special studies.
