This analysis uncovers misidentification of the white-cheeked tern in Kamchatka, suggesting correction of avifauna records.
The tern exhibited in the showcase of the Museum of the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St.-Petersburg) with the modern inventory number 1477 labelled as “Somali Tern Sterna repressa’’ is actually a Black-billed Common Tern Sterna hirundo longipennis (Nordmann, 1835), collected in Kamchatka by Friedrich Heinrich von Kittlitz. The indication by S.N. Bakkal (2024, Table 2) of a Sterna repressa in the list of birds transferred to the Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences by F. Kittlitz from Kamchatka is erroneous. Thus, there is no reason to include the White-cheeked Tern Sterna repressa E.J.O. Hartert, 1916, into the avifauna of Kamchatka and, accordingly, into the avifauna of Russia, taking into account the publication of S.N. Bakkal (2024)
